MAPS AND NETWORKS INSTALLATION

After completing the videos for maps and networks, we then had to set up our installation after Christmas. On the first day of coming back to uni, as a class we walked up and down the corridor with Rosie deciding where everyone's work would go. Danielle and I were unable to get The Box in the quad as it was currently occupied with other work. So we got to work thinking where we would want our twin screen. We decided the alcove near the beginning of the corridor would be excellent for us.

The next day we came into uni and learned how to drill the brackets into the walls, The technician Tom was very kind and helped us all day with the brackets, making sure they were secure and straight. I measured out the wall and the screens, and worked out exactly where I wanted them to go so they would be central. Once the brackets were up, we could mount our two TV screens. This was a bit fiddly but we did it in the end. We were fortunate in our work being near a power supply, so we just plugged them into the mains. To make sure the cables weren't tidy, we had to attach this stuff called trunking that was essentially a plastic tube you could feed wires through and it would look tidy and nice. So we set about finding some trunking and got that all attached

On Wednesday Danielle went to go and source materials to dress the alcove we had chosen. We had talked previously about what we wanted it to look like, we decided dressing it like a bedroom felt appropriate and that would make it link in with the film, and of course have lots of red.

Thursday came around quickly and Danielle had sourced some pretty red netting to hang around our display to look like a bedroom. We decided to bring in spare bed sheets, cushions, and things you would typically find in a girls bedroom, like underwear, fake nails, makeup etc. We stapled the red netting around the ends of the alcove with a staple gun, then set to work on securing all the sheets and things spread across the bed. We printed off pictures about feminism and girl bands to make the room feel it had someone living there. This took nearly all day as we wanted it perfect.

As the week drew to a close, on Friday we were all finished with our installation so we just took lots of photos of it because we are so proud. I am super happy the way it turned out and looked. We had mixed feedback on our work from students passing by and watching it, but if art doesn't create conversation and differing opinions than is it good art? I am happy at how it looks and how well we managed to set the scene alongside our screens.

I hope you enjoy. Thank you

MAPS AND NETWORKS EVALUATION

In this blogpost I will evaluate the whole process from start to finish of Danielle and I's film.

PRE PRODUCTION

Danielle and myself decided to pair up again, as we had worked so well in the first year on our experimental film together. The process of that film was easy and seamless so it seemed silly not to do the process again together. We started talking about ideas and what inspired us, which lead on to feminism and women's rights. So we decided to research into feminist women, artists, and articles talking about female empowerment and repression. This got us into thinking how we feel women are represented in the media, through male gaze and such conformist ways. We discussed where we would want to film as our idea started to fill out and got our pre production done easily and quickly, eager for sign off from Rosie.

SHOOTING

We arranged a day in the reading week to film, we found a willing actress very quickly and used all of our own equipment for the shoot. As we were filming in my house I spent the morning cleaning and ensuring all areas were tidy as I knew there would be a lot of equipment around and bags and things. I re printed out the shooting script and schedule so we could remind ourselves if we ever went off track. We took into consideration our actress and her being cold in minimal clothing and made sure she was covered warmly when shooting wasn't on and took regular breaks as we had LED lights on. As me and Danielle were well organised for the shoot day there was no delays in anything and we worked very well and closely together.
The hardest task of the day was getting the footage we wanted in the bath tub, we were dead set on filming in the bath, we just had to try and figure out how this was achievable. We put on the rain cover the 305 had in case of any splashing, then I had to get in the bath with the actress to ensure we got the over the head shots we wanted. This was a major risk in case I slipped, we tired the actress out, it got too cold for her, or water damage but we ensured that our risk assessment was thorough so that we could respond quickly if any of those situations came up. We found a secure camera strap that went around my neck so the camera was secure as well as in my hands. We looked back at our schedule to ensure we could make this bath scene as quick and smooth as possible so our actress wasn't cold.
We were happy with all the footage from the day, and as we had started filming early this meant we had hours of footage to play with for each screen. With all our filming out the way it meant we could focus on studio shoot and then edit this piece after.

EDITING

To edit we used Premier Pro and made titles to fit in between some of our clips, we colour corrected and recorded a voice over to fit the length of the piece. This went smoothly, despite some audio issues we exported in the correct formats as single screens ready for After Effects to make it a twin screen. We had again some issues with After Effects, but only minor as they were very easy to adjust and we could continue with exporting. Overall I feel this process went really well, with great communication skills, scheduling was well planned as we started exporting each screen at midday so we left ourselves with a lot of time for any things we needed to fix.

PRESENTATION

With the piece all done and dusted we have thought long and hard about what sort of space was suitable for our twin screen. We felt this piece could become an installation in the right environment, so we requested the box in the quad that often has interactive pieces in. We feel this would be an incredible space to hang our two screens in the back, paint the box an erotic red, with plush fluffy throws on the floor, to make it feel intimate, sexual and womb like to bring our piece together and create the environment that suits our film. Having the box would be an added bonus as our film displays nudity, and if our piece was in the corridor it would have to be covered on open days, so if it was in the box in the quad it could just be locked up and tucked out the way. Even though I think nudity shouldn't be sexualised but instead celebrated.

I hope you enjoy. Thank you

MAPS AND NETWORKS SHOOT

After we had had the green light for all of our pre production pack, we decided to start shooting as early as possible. Just so when studio shoot comes around the corner we will be able to focus on that.

We arranged with our actress that we would like to shoot at 10am on the 31st of October. This was during study week, so if we needed to re shoot we had enough time without it being an issue. The actress had a lot of her own equipment that we were able to borrow. So the shoot started at 10am at my house. We had a 305, tripod, two LED lights, waterproof case for the 305 and a DSLR for taking pictures behind the scenes of the shoot. Me and Danielle discussed that we wanted to shoot the sofa screen first. We wanted shots of her sitting and lying on the sofa in suggestive ways, and all shots framed very tightly. So we briefed the actress about what we wanted from her, she had read over the shot list and script previously but we wanted to give her context physically. Then we started shooting. We filmed for about 3 hours and then took a lunch break, we reviewed the footage which cast and crew were happy with, then we got back into filming. We polished up a few scenes on the sofa and then started preparing for the bath shoot.

For the bath shoot, we again briefed the actress on what we wanted, and how we would execute it. We wanted to have a blood red colour to resemble blood and have connotations of periods, lust, romance and anger which we felt women were shamed for feeling these emotions or frowned appon for having a period. We then started filling up the bath tub as we got actress and equipment ready. For the bath we knew we wanted a red colour, so previously myself and Danielle went to Lush to select some bathbombs that would really give us the blood red colour we were looking for. Fortunately they had some in the colours we wanted, so we selected two and mixed them together in the bath. This gave us such a great red colour that was perfect for the shoot. As we were working around water, we had to be careful and relate back to our risk assessment, so we ensured that camera was far away from the water and zoomed in, and that the lights were also away from water.

I feel the bath shoot was a success and the crew and cast were happy when we reviewed the footage. We stuck to our schedule which was good as it meant we still had time to redo some shots if needed. Overall I felt the day was a success, we got the footage we wanted, the actress was happy with it too, and we were safe and so was the equipment. Attached below are some images from the shoot.

INSPIRATION - MAPS AND NETWORKS III

During some research we stumbled across a series on Netflix that has a collection of documentaries. The series is called Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On, the first episode you meet a director called Erika Lust. Within the documentary episode she has an interview, and gives her opinion on porn saying that she thinks porn is mainly aimed at men, for the pleasure of the men, on screen and off. Erika then goes on to say that she produces are own films where she likes to create films around the woman's pleasure, receiving it and displaying it, rather than it being just for the pleasure of men and woman having to fake it.

Danielle shared some interesting facts with me about Erika lust:

  • In December 2014, Lust hosted a TED-talk at TEDxVienna. In the talk, entitled "It's Time For Porn To Change", Lust urges people to question the modern state of porn, its messages and role as a sexual educator.
  • The TED talk launched the start of her campaign #changeporn, an online campaign intended to challenge and change the porn norm.
  • She graduated university in 1999 with a specialism in human rights and feminism
  • Lust is currently producing short pornographic films based on crowd-sourced stories. Viewers can leave anonymous confessions on the project's website. Each month, Lust handpicks two stories and turn them into cinematic short films.

After watching this first episode I continued to watch the series. It is a really good series definitely worth watching just through an interest point of view, and educational. I enjoyed seeing a powerful woman in the media industry wanting to make a change in the way porn is shot and perceived. It is reassuring that powerful woman are standing up to women's pleasure in the industry and trying to empower female pleasure.

I hope you enjoy, thank you.

INSPIRATION - MAPS AND NETWORKS II

For maps and networks our key themes are feminism and female liberation. I decided to talk to Danielle about potential research, articles or films we had seen in the past that we could use for inspiration for our piece. Danielle sent me a link to an article about ending shaming to women. In the article it talks about sexual freedom and how men are allowed it but woman are shamed for sexual freedom. It also talks about promiscuous traits in men and the discrimination women are objected to from being shamed for their sexuality.

I have also seen and been aware of that in the media men are praised for taking their clothes off, encouraged and called sexy. Plus new trends in body image of men embracing their "dad bods" meaning men who aren't super buff and into the gym, these men have more relaxed sometimes "chubby" looking bodies and they get praised too. However for women in the media they are shamed for taking their clothes off, deemed as "slutty" or vein because they are embracing their bodies. Also plus sized models are often fat shamed for their size and not seen as beautiful all because they carry a bit more weight on themselves. This just goes to show the mentality of the media towards women as most media is shot from the male gaze, therefore has a pre-disposition to be what men want to see and what pleasures men.

There has also been many accounts on the news and other media of sexual harassment and rape towards females, and the first thing the talk about is what they are wearing. This is of course a completely backwards way of thinking, assuming that the woman's outfit promotes her to being sexually harassed or raped, that wearing revealing outfits gives someone the right to assault them. However, if you turned the situation around no one would comment on what the man was wearing because his outfit shouldn't dictate weather or not he is sexually harassed, it is just seen as a horrific situation. This just demonstrates and confirms the imbalance in these sorts of situations dependent on their gender.

Sorry for such a heavy post.
I hope you enjoy, thank you.

INSPIRATION - MAPS AND NETWORKS I

With our maps and networks idea well under way with the pitch fast approaching, we feel we can constantly be inspired throughout our film process. One thing I enjoy about our course is that we are encouraged to find inspiration in every types of media and form of art. Danielle stumbled across an illustration artist online called Kine Andersen. Even though we are doing a moving image piece, Danielle and myself are constantly taking inspiration from everywhere; Tabloids, moving image work, photography and illustration. Attached below are some illustration pieces we were inspired by in terms of their colour pallet, and feminism elements.

BITCH

DISCOVER YOUR FUCKING FLOWER

LOVE YOURSELF

SORRY BABY

I adore illustration work anyway, as I am fascinated by the colour pallet people use and the simple line drawings. So I tried to find some illustration work that related to what our piece was about. Danielle came across this artist, who does simple line drawings and liberates women in their own bodies without sexualising them. I am always a fan of work like this as I feel men would find it hard to make art liberating women without exploiting them or offending them. I adore the liberation in these illustrations and how much power the women have in them. I am all for seeing strong women standing powerful and in control, and I feel these illustrations are a great example. Even though we are not doing an illustration or animation piece, I feel this is good inspiration for colour and potential framing for shots in my piece.

I hope you enjoy. Thank you

MAPS AND NETWORKS PITCH

For maps and networks myself and Danielle have decided to work together again, after digital materialisation that went so well, with great feedback, we felt that working together again would be beneficial for our work and grades. Previously we have had very similar ideas for style, themes and colour pallet. With maps and networks we found that we drew similar ideas from the title and decided it would be a great idea to collaborate again. With our schedules, filming and editing being so on time and accurate I felt that time management is one of our strong points with working together.

This installation piece has a theme of maps and networks. After spending a few weeks exploring artists that had literal and theoretical themes surrounding maps and networks, myself and Danielle selected artists we felt were relevant to what our idea represents. We called on our first year knowledge and sourced out Bill Viola as research as his Martyrs piece was a classic example of a well executed multi screen piece to do with the elements. Another source of knowledge was Jemima Stelhi, with Performing for the Camera. We liked the feminism elements from this piece and felt it was strong and relatable to our idea. We especially liked the themes of forcing men to be aware of what they want as she took her clothes off in front of them and made them uncomfortable and aware.

CONCEPT

The concept of our piece is a twin screen moving image piece. The piece has surrounding themes of feminism, female invisibility and female body positive culture. We feel a twin screen is best for our idea as we can display two feelings and themes at the same time so the audience is made aware of what we are trying to say. On one screen we shall have a woman in a red bath trying to call for help underwater. This is because we feel that often women don't have a voice in the work place, the creative industry and medically. Women are often told to appreciate cat calling as a compliment instead of the cat caller being called out, women have to carry that fear and those comments around. When we do try and speak up for ourselves we feel we are ignored and not taken seriously; Hence the woman underwater trying to call for help. The red colour of the bath water has many connotations to us. Such as, erotic and sexual connotations, femininity, periods and the anger of being suppressed. The erotic and sexual connotations of red roses, lipstick, Valentine's Day, lingerie, sex, danger and erotic kinks. The femininity elements of red are romance, roses, nail varnish, "a well kept woman" sexual desire and menstruation. Menstruation is a key theme with the connotations of red for women, being such a natural part of a woman's life yet turned against her as being unclean, disgusting, shameful and impure. Also the fact that tampons are seen as a luxury item and not taken seriously as an essential item in a woman's life just goes to show that women are oppressed.

On the other screen we will have a women sat on a red sofa with the main shot being of her naked torso. It will be a mid shot of her on the sofa with her boobs out and her legs crossed so you can't see between her legs but you know she is naked. Within this shot you will be able to hear her talking about important topics, current affairs and women issues with her head out of shot. The reason for this shot is linked to Jemima Stehli's work of showing the audience exactly what they want, but making them uncomfortable about wanting it. This also links to the male gaze, as often films are filmed from the male perspective therefore automatically sexualise the female form. Every so often the shot will change to cut to her face, in which we can see stained red lipstick and mascara that has run down her face, showing that she is uncomfortable about being naked for the audience. However we will make sure that the actress is comfortable being naked on camera. The red of the sofa and her lipstick links with the red bath and the connotations of female oppression and sexuality. This then confirms to the audience that the two screens are linked.

CONTEXTUAL UNDERSTANDING

We want to create a film that relies on contextual understanding of women's problems and vague but suggestive shots for the audience to interpret by the audience. We have used video and photographical artists as our research but feel we are branching out and creating something original.

Our concept is to demonstrate and display how women feel in the media and everyday lives, constantly being sexualised. We want to explore how voiceless women feel, how they are shamed for their bodies, yet also sexualised. We will be taking influence from the few weeks of being exposed and shown different artists and how that can affect our work and the meaning to it. Our aim for this twin screen is to educate people on how women feel and make the audience aware that we are human beings not just a sexual item there for your pleasure.

TECHNICAL AND CREATIVE SKILLS

For this production we will be filming on a Canon 700D. This is because we will need to get close intimate shots for our film and feel a 305 will be too big and in the way. Using a DSLR also gives us the options of changing lenses to a prime 50mm lens for a shallow depth of field. We will also need a tripod as we want to keep our shots as still and consistent as we can, therefore excluding any continuity errors. We will then take the rushes into premier pro and start to edit them as seperate screens. After we are happy with each screen we will then take them into After Effects and start to colour correct and add any effects we think will enhance the piece; After we have done that we will then combine the two screens. We are not expecting to add any effects other than colour correcting but ideas develop all the time so we may end up using some. We could potentially enhance the red on both screens as to draw the audience to our piece.

SELF MANAGEMENT

As proven in previous project Danielle and I been very good with self management, communication and schedules. Our pre production is always filled with time plans and schedules to make sure we are allowing enough time for filming and editing. As for communication, we speak very often and always update each other on what research we have done or blog posts so we are both up to speed with the project. With self management, we have always made projects that we are passionate about therefore self management is easy and enjoyable as we want to see this film blossom. Throughout the process we will constantly update our blogs on more research and how the process of the film is coming along to ensure we have solid documentation of the film and its process from start to finish.

MAPS AND NETWORKS IDEAS AND RESEARCH

We have been given the task of producing a piece of work that has connotations and links to the title "maps and networks" As this is such a broad title, where you could link any work I struggled to come up with a solid idea. Having so much creative freedom with projects is such a blessing and a curse. My imagination went directly into analysing maps and networks and what they mean to me. Of course the first thing that connected with the title was physical maps, geographical drawings, social networks, networking events etc. However, as a perfectionist I didn't feel creative enough just simulating an idea stemming from what I had originally interpreted the title as. I set the idea aspect aside, and decided to do some research of my own into video artist and photographers that inspired me in one way or another.

Reflecting on previous lectures and presentations throughout first and second year a few artists stick out for me in which i adored their work. Firstly Jemima Stehli. Her series Performing for the Camera captured me instantly. I am forever fascinated in voyeurism, the male gaze, female oppression and this was the perfect series for me to look at. In this series she sits art curators down, tells them they can take the photo when they feel uncomfortable as she undresses. The whole series includes many different uncomfortable looking men holding the shutter as she is naked, getting undressed, or even with her clothes on. As much as I enjoyed this power play, in giving men the thing they want so bad and making them self aware and uncomfortable, I found flaws in this series. Instead of liberating women and their bodies being sexualised I feel she just reiterated the stigma. I enjoyed her thought behind her series, as to show men that on the screen that they watch explicit videos on, there are real people behind it. I found this theme intriguing and will hope to explore this more in my maps and networks work.

Performing for the Camera

Performing for the Camera

Another artist for me that comes to mind is Bill Viola. His use of the elements and his multi screen work really interests me. Doing multi screen work in first year made me realise how much more you can show and portray in more than one screen, I like the look of multi screens and syncing them together is something I find satisfying. As a class last year we had the pleasure of going to St Paul's cathedral to see Martyrs. This is a four screen piece that focuses on the elements and the human body. All screens work together and are in sync as the people are subject to the four elements. I felt this piece was very moving yet calm, as you watched how peaceful and also how damaging the natural elements can be. I like the idea of exploring how elements can exist alongside human beings and the impact they have on each other. I also enjoyed how calm the piece was despite what you were watching. I feel I can link Stehli and Viola to support my idea for maps and networks.

Martyrs

This leads me onto my idea for maps and networks. I have decided to create a dual screen piece, with one screen me underwater trying to scream for help and explain my problems. This has a subliminal message of me not feeling like I have a voice in terms of being a woman, an a patient of the NHS and mental health. Showing that I don't have any say in my life and speaking up for myself. As for the second screen, I haven't decided quite yet. I have a few ideas such as the other screen being a series of everyday activities made sexual because it is with a naked woman's body. This could create interesting contrast as one screen I am crying out for help and no one can hear me, but on the other screen I have everyone's attention because I am naked.

I hope you enjoy. Thank you.
